What the most effective executive LinkedIn photos have in common.
We analyzed 100 Fortune 500 CEO LinkedIn profile photos using facial expression analysis focused on smile authenticity, eye contact, lighting quality, and composition. The findings challenged many assumptions about what professional authority looks like and revealed clear patterns in the photos that generated the most engagement.
Two thirds of high-performing executive profiles featured genuine Duchenne smiles with visible eye muscle involvement โ contradicting the assumption that top executives look serious and stern.
Nearly all of the highest-engagement executive profiles used soft natural lighting rather than harsh studio flash. The photos looked professionally lit but not artificially so.
Almost universal across the dataset โ clean plain or blurred backgrounds with no distracting elements. Every visual element directed attention to the face.
Looking directly at the camera creates a sense of direct engagement with whoever is viewing the profile. Profiles where the subject looked away from camera performed significantly worse.
The most trusted executive photos showed authentic warmth rather than performed authority. Trustworthiness is a bottom-up feeling that viewers experience rather than a top-down quality that can be projected through sternness.
The best executive photos communicated competence through everything except facial expression โ through professional attire, clean composition, high image quality, and confident posture. The expression itself communicated warmth and approachability.
Trustworthiness in a photo ultimately comes down to authenticity. Photos that look like they were taken of someone being themselves โ rather than performing a professional role โ consistently tested as more trustworthy across all demographics.
