Zygomatic Arch
The zygomatic arch is the bony bridge running from the cheekbone to the temple — its width and prominence drive face shape.
Definition
The zygomatic arch is the bony bridge formed by the temporal process of the zygomatic bone meeting the zygomatic process of the temporal bone. It runs horizontally from the cheekbone backward to the temple region just in front of the ear. The arch defines the maximum width of the upper face (bizygomatic width) and is the primary anchor for the masseter muscle, which passes underneath. Visible zygomatic arches — meaning the arch is prominent enough to cast a shadow or be palpable through skin — are associated with low body fat, strong bone structure, and a sculpted facial appearance. Width and forward projection of the arch are both measurable and contribute to FWHR.
Why it matters
The zygomatic arch is the single bone that determines how wide and angular the upper face appears. It is the anchor for the entire midface aesthetic — strong arches produce model-tier cheekbone presentation, while weak or narrow arches produce a soft, oval upper face. The arch is also the structural element most affected by buccal fat removal, which can make existing arch projection appear more pronounced by removing the soft tissue that fills the submalar hollow below it.
How AI measures it
Bizygomatic width — the horizontal distance between the two zygomatic arches at their widest point — is measured from a front-facing photo by detecting the lateral cheek landmarks. Forward projection requires three-quarter or profile view. AI tools combine width measurement with the FWHR calculation and report both raw width (in face-height units) and percentile.

Frequently asked questions
Are visible zygomatic arches attractive?
Generally yes — visible arches signal low body fat and strong bone structure, both of which are attractiveness markers. Extremely visible arches can read as gaunt, however.
Can buccal fat removal show the zygomatic arch?
Buccal fat removal sharpens the submalar hollow below the arch, which makes the arch itself appear more prominent by contrast. The arch position doesn't change.
Is the zygomatic arch the same as the cheekbone?
The cheekbone (malar eminence) is the front-facing prominent point. The arch is the bridge that extends backward from it to the temple. They are continuous parts of the same zygomatic bone.
